I've interrupted Hotel de Dream to reread White's novel A Boy's Own Story, which I love, and White's autobiography My Lives. While the main reason I fell in love with "A Boy's Own Story" was Edmund White's superb writing style, I did not fail to recognize the qualities that makes it a great work of literature. When I was younger I used to love looking through it as a window on a completely fantasy world. 'A Boy's Own Story' is an autobiographical account of how an adolescent discovers and comes to terms with his homosexuality. The author's travel experiences often set the backdrop for the boys' own adventure stories he wrote, or allowed him to imagine and describe places he hadn't visited. Originally published in 1982 as the first of Edmund White's trilogy of autobiographical novels, A Boy's Own Story became an instant classic for its pioneering portrayal of homosexuality. Yet, reading “Baby Be-Bop,” I never thought about the author's gender. And this isn't genre writing either. It is a comedy of errors, a gothic mystery, a boy's own story; a traditional 19th-century novel seemingly rewritten by Burroughs or Ballard. One of my father's possessions is a bound copy of the first few editions of Boy's Own magazine. An esteemed novelist and cultural critic, Edmund White is the author of many books including the autobiographical A Boy's Own Story, the memoir City Boy and now Jack Holmes and His Friend. White is the author of a trio of classic gay autobiographic novels, “A Boy's Own Story,” “The Beautiful Room is Empty,” and “The Farewell Symphony.” They are required reading for anyone intersted in gay literature. Towleroad is reporting gay novelist Edmund White (A Boy's Own Story, The Beautiful Room is Empty, Jack Holmes and his Friend) suffered a stroke earlier this month. You'll find geometry, technology and trauma. I find it superior to its predecessor (A Boy's Own Story), with better characters, stronger narrative and an exciting change in the protaganist. Francesca Lia Block had transcended gender because she so perfectly observes and tells a boy's own story—my story. For instance Robert Glück's reads Edmund White's, A Boy's Own Story as a transgressive piece of fiction that argues against reading the novel as an example of 'crossover' literature with mainstream audiences. On Michael Cunningham's The Hours: People who love Mrs. Loops, repetitions and mutations.
